the name game

topic posted Fri, February 10, 2006 - 8:39 AM by  kristen
so, how did we all decide to name our kids what we named them?

my first is connor michael. i saw "connor" on an old family tree, and i thought it sounded awesome. little did i know that four years later it'd make the list of fast-growing boy's names. **sigh** it didn't help that exactly one week later, angel named HIS son connor (i'm a huge buffy fanatic) and i was accused of naming my kid after his, lol!.... "michael" is daddy's middle name. we didn't want to saddle anyone with the "junior" moniker, so we decided to pay tribute in a more subtle way. i like it.

the twins, now that is more difficult. if you think picking a name for one is bad, try two. i didn't wanna be cutesy (although i did suggest "jack" and "daniel"), no rhymes, no matching, no alliteration. and it doesn't help that everyone has suggestions (tom and jerry! mutt and jeff!). we made a list and picked two names to agree on: jonah and elias, eli for short. their middle names are our dad's first names, another tribute. i think it's nice, and it sure made our daddies' eyes well up when we told them.

if we have another boy, i dunno what their middle names will be, lol! we have four brothers between us. if we have a girl, she'll get my middle name, marie.

how 'bout you?

Well, you already know how I chose Briezy's name.

We decided on a pattern to make it fair (cause we don't completely agree on just about any names). I get the first girl, Jeff gets the second (which he wants to be Mara Jade (after Luke Skywalker's wife) and I want the middle name to be Janiece). Jeff gets the first boy, and I get the second. I want Harrison Kennedy. Jeff wants (get ready) Anakin, Julius Alexander, Joseph Hyrum, or Jeffrey David Jr. I HATE the Julius one. My brother's name is Jeffrey too, so don't want three jeff's around, don't much like joseph cause of how used it is.. and don't get me started on ANAKIN.. Ugh.. I'm trying to talk him into Christian Jericho or Jericho Christian. We'll see.. that is, of course, assuming we have any more!

Heh! My ex wanted Mara Jade and ankin too! I told him no way. I liked Mara Jade...except that his brother had just had a daughter and named her...Mara. Not Mara Jade but still. and anikin. Oy don't get me started on ankin.

AMEN!! Well, we're getting a divorce, so it doesn't much matter what he wants to name a boy now!! IF I have another one, and it's a boy, I'm going with Parker!!

    Re: the name game

Ooh, great topic, and one my wife and I have been thinking about non-stop for the past couple of months!

Our first daughter is adopted, so we didn't get to choose her name -- Madison Rose Kathleen. We didn't want to change it because she already self-identified with it.

For our second, who will be joining us in the next couple or few weeks (we're due March 2, but she will likely come a week or two early), we wanted to pick a less common name. We love the name Madison, but we probably would have picked something else, as Madison has been in the top two or three girl names for the past four or five years. Our other ground rule was -- no duplication of names of people that are in our life. A derivative would be fine, as long as it wasn't too close.

Also, we wanted some kind of connection to Madison's name...some kind of pattern. First we were thinking city names. Savannah was an early contender, but we picture Savannah as a blond with blue eyes, with Southern roots. With my (Chinese) heritage, we are pretty sure that our new daughter will not fit that. Actually, Madison would be a perfect Savannah; her birth father is even from Georgia. I also suggested Brielle (after the New Jersey city), and it might still be at the back of my wife's mind. My cousins who live in Brielle love the name, though. :)

Then we thought of presidential names. I liked Kennedy, but my wife didn't. The presidential thing didn't get too far.

So we decided on alliteration. We both liked Makayla, but thought it was too common. So we decided to change it up a little bit and go with Mikyla ("mih-KYE-la"), or Kylie for short. My wife is going to call her Kylie, so we were wondering if we should just make that her name...but our sense was that she might want to be a Mikyla later in life, so naming her Mikyla would give her the flexibility to go by Mikyla, Kylie, Kyla, or even Miki. In any event, our choice was somewhat committed when my wife's mom gave us a personalized piggy bank and door hanger at the baby shower a couple weeks ago.

Now we just need a middle name. We kind of want an "R" name (for further alliteration), but can't find any that we like, that sound good with Mikyla.

One more thing, one of our early contenders was Amaya (yes, from the Real World, and I was thinking of Colin for a boy, not making the RW connection at the time). However, someone pointed out to us that Amaya sounds like "Am I a...?" and with our last name, it could be particularly bad, as it would sound a lot like "Am I a ho?" We figured that some substitute teacher would be bound to make that mistake, as my wife and I are often mistakenly called Ho's.

we had one rule when choosing names: if anyone vetoed, the name was totally out.

this sucked, because i seriously, seriously wanted to name one of the twins axel. i love it. it's really a very manly name..... but the hubby said no.

for city names, i dig berlin. if i have a girl, her name's gonna be berlin marie.

Funny that I posted that last Friday...

A few hours later, I got the call to meet my wife at the hospital! Three weeks early!

And on Sunday, Mikyla ("Kylie") Renee was born. Mom and baby are healthy.

Our youngest is named after the New England Patriots QB. His middle name is Brady. Hubby & I couldn't agree on anything & the doc was going to induce me on the Sunday of the Super Bowl in '04 (that the Pats won, BTW) Hubby told the doc I would be delivering the baby alone.

This is funny! My son is named after Conrad Dobler.....apparently tone of he most notorious NFL players in the 70's for violence.....great!!!! Ironically my little guy is incredibly mild mannered....down right sensitive in fact. His middle name is Blue.....just cause we liked it. Has a good ring, Conrad Blue. We had it picked out before he was even born....before I was even pregnant, and we never could agree on a girls name (we didn't find out the sex of the baby).

I can't reply. All I can think is, you're pregnant? three kids and you're willing to do it again?

    wow!

      Oh great topic!

My daughter's name is Tamsen. I used to work with a woman who went to school with a Tamesn and she was going to use it if she had a boy...she didn't, and I never saw her again, so I took it. Her middle name is Claire after my mother's middle name. I really wanted to name her Maryah, but my husband refused it outright...Now I am glad because everyone would have thought it was after Maryah Carey...which it wasn't. It was after the wind.

My son is Rynne. After Rynne Sanburg of the Chicago Cubs...Highest paid player in baseball at the time and his dad was an avid baseball fan. My son went to school with a boy who had Rynne was his middle name for the same reason. He has two middle names, Nigel and Stephen, after his dad and his grandfather. We didn't want to break tradition and not have the grandfather's name be the middle, but we loved Nigel so much. He went through most of his younger years with us singing, *Rynne Nigel Stephenhimer *---* It just worked!

        Love the topic!
My son is half mexican, half american. I wanted to give him a name that had meaning in both Spanish and English.

Funny, another friend of mine had a son about 8 months prior . They were choosing between the names Sebastian and Julius. They chose Julius - I laughed when I read that post because Julius's dad said he'd probably get his arse kicked in school as a result of a name like that.

The name, Sebastian, stuck with me. When I found out I was having a boy, I looked up it's meaning. It means "deserving of respect" which meant a lot to me since respect is a lesson I want to keep in the forefront of my teachings with my son. I went with Mateo for the middle name ... the spanish version of Matthew ... which means gift from God ... and since he was a "surprise" pregnancy, there was no other way to view him.

With a name like Sebastian Mateo he can choose later what he wants to be called. Many options there: Sebastian, Bastian, Bash, Ian, Mateo, Matt, Teo, he'll have a variety of options.

        :~)

My little girl's name is Alicia Rae.... Alicia, because i have always luved that name! He was thinking Tiffany or something like that. But we already knew sooo many girls with that name. Alicia was something that although we had heard it, we didn't directly know anyone with that name. And then Rae came from my grandpa (Jimmy Ray) and his grandpa (Raymond) we just tweaked the spelling to make it more girly.

Lynton (comes out Lynten all the time).
I'm a lit. student and fell in love with the characters from Wuthering Heights.
One of the characters (although not a fav. was Linton) So we femmed it up a bit by changing the "I" to a "Y". Like ya do with Sidney/Sydney. Her sister is a Sydney too.
            Lynton
            Sydney
I thought they looked nice together...and there was NO topping Lynton's name...but now that Syd-syd is nearly 5 I realized that everyone and their cousin are using Sydney now, sorta like Connor!
            (damn-it!)
So, Lynton Suzanne (my mom's name)
And Sydney Michaela (my brother is Mike)
My DH wanted HIS mother's first name for kid #2 Linda...but I pointed out Lynton is a Lin of sorts...when that failed to win him over....I offered to trade him the first for the last name,...as I kept my last name!

my son's father wanted to name him Gevin. I'd never heard of it before and didn't really like it, plus it reminded me of Gavin Mcleod, captain Stubing of the Love boat. Once I vetoed that name he didn't want to look at other names or give any input so I went through a baby name book page by page and wrote down every boy name that struck my fancy. I had about 20 or so and just kept narrowing it down to the one I finally chose - Zayne. It's a great name and we get comments on it all the time. Plus now that I'm not with his father I doubly glad my son has a name that I got to choose by myself.

I wanted to name my son after my grandfather, Desmond, but it was vetoed by my son's father and my father. So I used it for his middle name. For his first name I chose Jack. I wanted a name that was easy to spell and easy to pronounce. My sister is alwasy whining about her name being a pain as she is always having to spell it and correct pronunciations.

My sister's girlfriend chose her son's name with love and much thought. De Anglo Justice Joesph (and a hyphnated last name) . We he is now 5 and when asked his name he proudly replies "Bert". His teachers went two weeks before finding out and many of his friends call him Bert. His mom doesn't mind but it is so cute. :)
