Or do you really put all the presents under the tree?
My son (8) asked me this last week. What would/have you said to your kids when this came up?

Re: Is There Really A Santa...
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 1:30 PMMy boys know I'm Santa. I was never willing to lie to them. So I told there there was a Santa guy a long time ago and that in honor of him giving gifts now people give them for him. and that usually it's the moms. (o:

Re: Is There Really A Santa...
Fri, December 14, 2007 - 9:48 PMWell, since Max is just about one - and celebrating his first Christmas - it's sort of a moot point this year. We did take him to meet Santa at the mall, which he dug.
I plan on perpetuating the myth of Santa for as long he goes along with it. I think it's awesome! -

Fri, December 14, 2007 - 9:48 PMOh, and to answer your question Sandy, I'd have asked him "What do you think?" and gone from there.

Re: Is There Really A Santa...
Sun, December 16, 2007 - 4:02 PMI think I would have asked him what he thought too ... and then gone from that point; I'm with Lizzer, and plan on keeping Santa alive for as long as I am around, lol. I have never told them that I leave the stockings, and I plan on continuing that tradition - I loved all the possibilites as a child .... we are having this conversation on another tribe I belong to, and here is what I posted there:
"There actually was a St. Nickolaus, and the tradition of Santa Claus arose from the actions of this person, and the beliefs and traditions of people like Christopher Columbus - and of course, it is tied into Christianity as well - here's a good link for anyone that cares to check it out:
www.stnicholascenter.org/Brix
In any case, I do not rabidly insist there *is* a Santa Claus, I sort of sidestep the questions - at some point, I figured there wasn't really someone sliding down the chimney to leave us gifts and fill our stockings, but the *possibility* was something I believe in to this day - the spirit of the giver, the spirit of the season. People believe in all sorts of things that have no physical case in fact - no one has seen God, and Jesus Christ was probably a person, but who knows if he was truly the son of God? Entire religions are based on things that cannot be seen ... in any case, I expect my kids kind of know, but the idea or the spirit of things is what I have always impressed on them.
It seems to me that this is no different than choosing to see the good side of things, even when faced with bad things ... to me, it's all about hope, and perspective has so much to do with that ... it's like magic for the heart ... "

Re: Is There Really A Santa...
Sun, December 16, 2007 - 8:21 PMIt is about magic, at least for me.
When I was, I dunno, 7 or so, we moved to an apartment that had no chimney. It was right around Christmas, so I asked my mom how Santa would get in. She said, "Well, the secret is that Santa is magic. He gets in because you want him to come in, and he is magic." That was enough for me. -

Re: Is There Really A Santa...
Mon, December 17, 2007 - 8:36 AMyour mom is a smart lady.
i, too, am going to keep the myth of santa as long as possible. i found out about santa when i was four, but somehow that hasn't stopped me from loving it anyway. i have this t-shirt that says "i (^still) believe in santa", and everyone laughs, but it's true. to me, santa is a way of acting. i truly, truly love christmas. i love the giving, i love the season, the feeling- it really is magic. i believe in the idea of santa and the idea of the christmas season.
we happened to be at the mall a few weeks ago, and santa was there, no kids in line. so we went on over, and my boys (5, 4, and 4) were in awe of him. they didn't know what to say, and the twins were glassy-eyed until i sort of urged them to talk to him- then they were talking so fast and at the same time that i wish i had a video camera because of the perplexed look on the man's face. classic. then the 5-yo hung back shyly and blurted out the first thing that came to his head. when we were driving home, he seriously asked me, "mama. do you think santa knows what i really wanted?" (he was worried he wouldn't get the other stuff) to which i replied, "well, sweetie. if you want, we can write him a letter." to which he in turn replied " how about an email, mama?"
i know this santa thing won't last much longer. but i plan on keeping it around for at least a few more years. i don't think i'd want it to go on much longer, though. kids can be cruel, and learning from sneering and snarky 8-yos that there's no santa is not the way i'd want them to find out, y'know? -

Re: Is There Really A Santa...
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 11:37 AMWhen my daughter, who is three years older than my son, started to badger me about the viability of santa, I just said, *If you don't believe, he won't bring you anything.* Mostly because I still wanted my son to have that magic.
Santa still brings presents. they magically appear under the tree in the night...To be honest, in the morning because the kids stay up longer than I can and I am always up baking before they are.
Hell, my mother still puts *from Santa* on my packages!
