Question: when is a kid old enough to go into a public restroom on their own? My son is 5, and I don't think he is at that point yet, based on the fact that he frequently can't reach the sinks, or soap dispensers without help, sometimes needs assistance with fastening his clothing, etc, but I would say he is fairly close.
Here's the problem: now, every time we are out in public and have to use the bathroom, we have to have a ten minute discussion about why I can't go into the men's room with him, but he can come into the women's room with me. I have tried once or twice to send him in, but once he couldn't find the light and wandered around in the dark for ten minutes, and the other time I ended up having to go in after him as he had a fashion emergency and required assistance.
Yikes!

Re: The public bathroom woes
Wed, November 8, 2006 - 9:16 PMmy older son is 7 and I am just now starting to let him go in...if there seems to be no one else inthere or a couple of men in there and I am not afraid to stand at the door and talk to him the whole time.
I just told him it was one of those mom things that I said he had to go with me. -

Sat, November 11, 2006 - 10:32 PMwe are...but oh well.
I had this come up recently because my 4 year old has decided he must have to go right as I am checking out. So I had my 7 year old take him to the bathroom. and I was a mess! I won't do that again.

Re: The public bathroom woes
Sun, November 12, 2006 - 9:44 AM5 is too young. take him in the ladies room with you. my son is 11 and depending on the surroundings and our comfort level with the safety of the area he still comes in with me sometimes. there are a lot of crack pots out there and sending him into the men's room alone at 5 is a bit risky IMHO. when my son was little there was no discussion about which room to use we just used the one i chose so there's never been any balking at using the ladies room over the men's room with us. -

I personally don't understand why bathrooms are separated at all. I mean, each stall has a door, and if men really need urinals, there could be one in each stall. -

Mon, November 27, 2006 - 7:15 PMI agree. Whenever my students make a big deal about a boy/girl being in the girl's/boy's bathroom I ask them, "Do you have a boy's and girl's bathroom in your house? What's the big deal?"
